A Mom’s Guide: What To Include In Your Toddler's Carry On Bag?

As a mom who has navigated the ups and downs of flying with a young child, I've compiled a comprehensive packing list to help make your trip smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your little one. These are my best tips on what to include in your toddler’s carry on bag:

1. Travel Documents and Essentials:

  • Passports/IDs for both you and your child.

  • Health insurance information.

  • Any necessary travel visas.

  • Prescription medications for both you and your child, along with a small first aid kit. Include baby pain reliever, bandages, antiseptic wipes and other supplies for minor emergencies. (this is not medical advice, this is based on my own experiences as a mom)

2. Comfort Items:

  • Lightweight stroller and/or baby carrier depending on your child's age for navigating the airport.

  • Comfortable clothing layers for you and your child.

  • Blanket or travel pillow for naps or comfort.

  • Favorite stuffed animal or blanket for your toddler.

  • Pacifiers for soothing during takeoff and landing.

3. Snacks and Meals:

  • Portable, non-messy snacks like crackers, dried fruit and cereal bars.

  • Sippy cup or spill-proof water bottle.

  • Baby food pouches or snacks for easy feeding.

  • Lollipops or snacks for you to help with ear pressure changes during takeoff and landing.

Refer to our “ Snacktime in the skies” for more on this.

4. Feeding Supplies (for moms with babies):

  • Bottles and pre-measured formula or expressed breast milk for during the flight.

  • Bottle warmer or a flask for warm milk.

  • Burp cloths for any spills or messes during feeding.

5. Entertainment:

  • Small toys or books to keep your toddler occupied during the flight.

  • Coloring books and crayons.

  • Interactive games or apps on a tablet or smartphone.

  • Headphones suitable for your child's ears.

  • Favorite songs or videos downloaded for offline viewing.

Refer to our “High-Flying Fun” for more on this.

6. Diapers and Hygiene:

  • Diapers and wipes (enough for the flight and extra for delays).

  • Changing pad or disposable liners provides a clean surface for diaper changes, especially in airplane lavatories.

  • Hand sanitizer or wet wipes for cleaning hands and surfaces.

  • Extra clothing for your child in case of spills or accidents.

  • Baby lotion or diaper rash cream.

7. Miscellaneous:

  • Travel-sized toiletries for you and your child.

  • Plastic bags for storing dirty diapers or clothes.

  • Baby-safe sunscreen if traveling to a sunny destination.

  • Baby carrier or sling for hands-free carrying during layovers.

Some additional tips which I found usefull:

  • Pack essentials in a carry-on bag for easy access during the flight.

  • Use clear, resealable bags to organize items like snacks and toiletries.

  • Consider packing an extra outfit for yourself in case of spills or accidents.

  • Label all bags and belongings with your contact information.

  • Keep important documents and medications in a separate, easily accessible pouch.

  • Pack Light: While it's essential to have everything your baby/child needs, try to pack efficiently and avoid overpacking

By packing the essentials outlined in this guide, you can help ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey for both you and your little one. Remember to stay patient and flexible and don't forget to enjoy the adventure along the way! Safe travels!
